Insight on Placement Years in Commercial Real Estate and Building Surveying

Why did you decide to apply for a placement year?

I realised that, while studying for a property degree, there is a lot of value in gaining hands-on experience in the industry before completing my studies. With the increase of non-cognate hires in the field, I wanted to ensure I was equipped with both practical experience and industry-specific knowledge. A placement year gives me the opportunity to apply the theory I’ve learned at university in a real-world setting while also developing professional skills and boosting my confidence in the workplace.

What does your placement look like?

I’ve been working within the Office Business Rates team, where I provide property taxation advice and help in identifying opportunities for rates savings. A big part of my role involves working with clients, providing updates on their progress, and advising on new sites. I also assist them in maintaining accurate budgeting and represent them in the marketplace. This experience has given me a first-hand insight into the complexities of property taxation.

What do you enjoy most about your placement?

My placement has provided me with a sense of purpose in knowing that my work directly impacts clients and their business. Being able to contribute to meaningful outcomes is incredibly fulfilling – especially when I see how my advice can lead to tangible improvements.

I also value the level of responsibility I’ve been entrusted with, particularly the opportunity to engage with clients directly. It’s rewarding to see the positive effects of the services and recommendations I provide, and it has strengthened my confidence in my ability to make a real difference in the industry.

What’s the most challenging part of your placement?

Business Rates were not covered in-depth in my university studies, despite their importance in the property sector. Because of this, I found it challenging to learn the specifics of my role when I first started. There was a lot of information to absorb, however, this has ultimately helped me develop a deeper understanding of the industry. Over time, I’ve become more comfortable navigating intricate property taxation concepts.

What support have you received from Newmark?

The support system during my placement has been outstanding. There are regular training sessions, covering a wide range of topics – from personal development to APC training – which have been essential in broadening my skill set. I also have frequent reviews with my line manager, where we discuss my progress, set goals and ensure I’m on track.

My team also plays a crucial role in my day-to-day support. They’re always approachable and willing to offer guidance. Their genuine interest in my success and continuous support has been invaluable in helping me grow both professionally and personally.

What advice would you give to others considering the same path as you?

A placement year is a unique chance to gain real-world experience and build competencies that go far beyond what you learn in the classroom. So, my advice would be to embrace the opportunity fully to help you learn and grow. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and seek help when needed – everyone has been in your position and is there to support you.

I also encourage everyone to be proactive and to get involved in as many tasks as possible. This is the best way to boost your confidence and expand your skill set. Accept every challenge that comes along, as it will push you to grow.

Lastly, take the time to network and build relationships with colleagues and other industry professionals—this can open doors to future opportunities, and many in the industry are eager to help the next generation succeed.
