Sutherland has completed transactions valued at between $10 and $20 million annually for the past 18 years.

Sutherland earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver (1994), where he was also a member of the lacrosse team. He graduated from the University of Denver in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration.
